U-PASS prices upped

U-PASS rates have increased 12 percent, effective July 1. On-campus parking prices also increased at a rate of 13 percent. For students, the cost of the U-PASS bus pass is now $50 per quarter or $23 per month. However, it is still a bargain compared to the two-zone Metro Transit pass at $81 per month.

24-oz. medical marijuana limit proposed

A proposal for patients authorized to possess or grow marijuana for medical reasons under Washington state law would limit possession to 24 ounces of harvested marijuana, plus six mature plants and 18 immature plants. The proposal was set forth by the Washington State Department of Health July 1. A rule-making process and a public-comment period have begun, with a public hearing set for Aug. 25.

Starbucks losing bucks

Starbucks is reportedly cutting 12,000 positions and closing 600 stores in the United States, in response to economic downturn and coffee competition from companies such as McDonalds. The selected stores would close by March 2009. International expansion efforts will be bolstered instead of domestic growth.

Penguins: canaries of the oceans?

Penguin populations are declining, signaling potentially catastrophic changes in the world’s oceans. A paper by UW Biology Professor Dee Boersma, published in the latest edition of BioScience, explores the effects of oil pollution, depletion of fisheries and coastline development on penguin populations. The fact that the penguins are dying may suggest that the oceans are in danger too.
