Crime blotter
May 20, 2008
On May 16, the UWPD responded to a report of a threatening phone call made to UW President Mark Emmert.
According to Emmert’s assistant, an irate man called the president’s office regarding the welfare of his son, presumably a UW student. The man allegedly said that he was concerned about how his son was treated at the UW and the lack of support he was receiving.
The man said something like, “‘If you don’t do something, I’m coming down to the UW to shoot all the fraternity members that are picking on my son,’” said UWPD Assistant Chief Ralph Robinson.
“The assistant then told the man that that was not an appropriate thing to say and that security would be contacted,” Robinson said. The incident is still under police investigation.
The next day, police responded to a report of an overnight burglary at Hutchinson Hall. According to the police report, room 116 was vandalized and robbed. One table had been turned over and several computers were on the floor. Several other computers were missing. A purse and its contents, which contained no identification of a possible suspect, had been dumped out onto a chair.
“There was no sign of forced entry and no witnesses,” Robinson said.
Also May 17, a vehicle pulled out of the University Village shopping center and was about to turn east onto Northeast 45th Street.
“The driver failed to see a pedestrian walking in an unmarked crosswalk,” Robinson said.
The vehicle hit the pedestrian and broke her left fibula, which punctured her skin. She was treated and taken to Harborview Medical Center.
On May 18, police noticed a man walking eastbound on the 1400 block on Boat Street in the traffic lane.
“He appeared to have the behaviors of a mental relapse or a drug overdose,” Robinson said. “He was mumbling to himself, and he didn’t respond to voice commands.”
Police eventually restrained the man, handcuffed him and questioned him about what he was doing.
“He could not identify himself,” Robinson said. “He claimed to be flying and said he wanted to have sex.”
The UWPD called for fire assistance, and the man was eventually taken to Northwest Hospital.
